Effective July 1, 2015, driving uninsured in Tennessee became costlier, with the fine for driving without the proper insurance increasing from $100 to $300. Following January 1, 2016, law enforcement officials are legally allowed to have your vehicle towed immediately if you are not able to provide proof of insurance. From now until January 1, 2017, the state of Tennessee will be implementing an online program to verify drivers’ insurance. Once implemented, the program will find drivers who do not have valid insurance by reviewing digital vehicle registration records. If the system finds that a vehicle is uninsured, the vehicle will not be eligible for registration renewal.
